Join Executive Rail for an exclusive travel experience celebrating National Train Day! National Train Day was created in 2008 as a way to promote rail travel and its rich history in the U.S. It is observed annually on or around May 10th, the anniversary commemorating completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 when the Golden Spike was ceremonially driven at Promontory Summit in Utah. In 2021, National Train Day falls on Saturday, May 8th.
Spend this historic day enjoying the spectacular scenery of Pennsylvania Dutch country and the Allegheny Mountains from the comfort of our restored 1949 railcar, the Catalpa Falls. The original bold colors and styles of the car’s mid-century design provide a comfortable and luxurious setting for your unique trip across the Keystone state, the same route that the Broadway Limited once traversed on the famous Pennsylvania Railroad.
Once the train departs New York and Philadelphia on Friday, you will be treated to the first of four on-board meals prepared entirely from original Pennsylvania Railroad recipes. Your trip through Pennsylvania’s breathtaking landscape will take you over famous railroading engineering landmarks, including Rockville Bridge and Horseshoe Curve, all while sipping period-correct cocktails in the comfort of the Catalpa Falls’ lounge or one of five bedrooms equipped for day service. The westbound trip will end with an exquisite and historically accurate Pennsylvania Railroad dinner, prepared on-board by our skilled chefs and punctuated by the railroad’s signature Pennepicure pie for dessert.
While in Pittsburgh, you can ride the famous Duquesne Incline, visit the world-renowned Frick House art museum, or even continue the railroad theme at the shops and restaurants at Station Square (the original 1898 Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad station and headquarters). Hop on a bus tour of the city from the Pittsburgh Tour Company, or simply let your senses guide you to some of Pennsylvania’s finest local breweries and eateries around Market Square.
After boarding the eastbound train, the Pennsylvania Railroad’s original cookbooks will again be exercised for an authentic breakfast offering as the train passes the site of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. As the early morning light cascades over the Alleghenies, the spectacular mountainside views will be on full display from the Catalpa Falls’ large picture windows. Lunch will be prepared from historic recipes as the train glides through the rolling fields of Amish farmland, ending a memorable weekend journey as the train returns to Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station and New York Penn Station.
The tickets for this rail adventure include round-trip rail transportation between New York/Philadelphia and Pittsburgh aboard the private railcar Catalpa Falls, four authentic Pennsylvania Railroad meals, and all beverages served aboard the train.
